Narrow-body jets are where fleet growth happens; wide-body counts crept up to a recent peak, while the regional count is lower than a decade ago after an uneven path.
What this shows: The chart covers 2011 to 2024. It plots Narrow-body, Wide-body and Regional on a vertical axis of Number of aircraft. Latest values: Narrow-body 4,649; Wide-body 1,309; Regional 1,630. Data run through 2024.
Conditions and method
Each year counts the operating aircraft filings in the three size categories. For 2024 that is 7,588 (4,649 narrow-body, 1,309 wide-body, 1,630 regional). Left out of the 2024 count: 366 operating filings of other aircraft types and 129 of types with no maintenance-cost record. Each count is of filings, so an aircraft filed twice in a year is counted twice. The three counts of the 2024 US fleet on this site (8,083 operating filings on the active-inactive chart, 7,588 on the category and age charts, 7,633 on the forecast roster) count different things and are not meant to agree.
