Aircraft filed as operating have climbed since the early twenty-tens to their highest count on the chart, while those filed as inactive spiked in the pandemic and fell back. The chart counts filings, not airframes.
What this shows: The chart covers 2006 to 2024. It plots Active and Inactive / parked on a vertical axis of Aircraft count. Latest values: Active 8,083; Inactive / parked 231. Data run through 2024.
Conditions and method
This chart counts the aircraft filings for 2024 that carry a valid build year: 8,314, 8,083 reported operating and 231 not. Every aircraft type is included, freighters among them. Each count is of filings, so an aircraft filed twice in a year is counted twice. The three counts of the 2024 US fleet on this site (8,083 operating filings on the active-inactive chart, 7,588 on the category and age charts, 7,633 on the forecast roster) count different things and are not meant to agree.
