Most flights on US tickets are on discounted-coach fares, though that share has slipped since the pandemic while full-fare coach has grown.

What this shows: The chart covers 2020 Q1 to 2025 Q2. It plots Unrestricted / high-fare basis (F/C/D), Full-fare coach (Y/G) and Discounted / restricted coach (U/X) on a vertical axis of Share of flights on tickets (%). Latest values: Unrestricted / high-fare basis (F/C/D) 2.25; Full-fare coach (Y/G) 24.43; Discounted / restricted coach (U/X) 72.64. Data run through 2025 Q2.

Conditions and method

The groups are fare-basis codes, which describe a ticket’s restrictions. Most coupons carry a discounted-coach basis (X is about 77%); fare basis F alone, the first-cabin basis, is about 0.16%.
