Australia: domestic capacity and demand
Quarterly load factor is revenue passenger-kilometres over available seat-kilometres for the quarter, the definition of BITRE (Australia's transport statistics bureau) applied to the quarter's totals

Over four decades Australian domestic traffic has grown faster than airline capacity, so planes fly steadily fuller.

What this shows: The chart covers 1984 Q1 to 2025 Q3. It plots Revenue passenger-km (RPK), indexed, Available seat-km (ASK), indexed and Load Factor (%) on a vertical axis of Index (1984 Q1 = 100) for passenger-km and seat-km. Latest values: Revenue passenger-km (RPK), indexed 777.7; Available seat-km (ASK), indexed 666.9; Load Factor (%) 82.4.

Conditions and method

BITRE’s separate annual summary reports slightly fewer domestic passengers and revenue passenger-kilometres for the second half of 2018 than the monthly workbook these series come from.
